The municipality of San Pedro del Pinatar is located at the northern end of the Mar Menor. It is one of the few municipalities where you can enjoy both this salt lagoon and the Mediterranean Sea or Mar Mayor, as we call it here.
Its current name is given at the beginning of the seventeenth century, after the construction of a small temple that fishermen in the area dedicated to Saint Peter Apostle and Fisherman, but it was not until the nineteenth century that San Pedro del Pinatar became the site of recreation of the inhabitants of Murcia, who came attracted by the famous healing mud baths.
However, this small town of about 25,000 inhabitants has one of the most beautiful natural attractions in the area: the Natural Park of Salinas de San Pedro. This area of about 857 hectares is a reserve of waterfowl and migratory birds where you can see various birds such as flamingos. It also has different lanes for bicycles, trails and free guided tours that take place from the months of February to December.
In these humidities we find dunes that form the natural beaches of La Torre Derribada and La Llana, which are located in the Mediterranean Sea. If you visit this natural space, during your journey you will find different constructions such as the Salt Mills.
These constructions are not the only ones that must be highlighted in San Pedro del Pinatar, because one of the most famous in the area is the Casa del Reloj or Finca San Sebastián, where the first president of the First Spanish Republic in 1873, D. Emilio Castelar died. Another architectural gem is the Baron de Benifayó Palace, where the Municipal Museum is currently located.
Finally, remember that the festivities of this municipality are divided into two: The festivities dedicated to their patron, Saint Peter Apostle that are celebrated on 29th of June, and the festivities that of the Virgen del Carmen, patron saint of the sailors, who they celebrate on 16th of July.
